The Lost, The Vicious
This original mixed media artwork by Josie Reyes, created in 2025, is part of the Confidential series. The piece features a Dodge parked outside a nondescript building, creating an atmosphere of mystery, surveillance, conspiracy, and cover-up. The seemingly ordinary American scene becomes a backdrop for questions about national identity and the meaning of being American. Both the automobile and the suggestion of conspiracy and institutional secrecy have become fundamentally woven into the American mainstream experience.
Created through magazine collage, fashion magazine cutouts, text, found words, and mixed media, the work layers familiar American imagery with fragments of language and visual culture. The juxtaposition of Americana imagery and cryptic details invites the viewer to construct their own narrative—much like piecing together clues in a case file.
The Lost, The Vicious examines the tension between the everyday and the hidden, asking what lies beneath the surface.
